Frederick Denison Maurice

MauriceMaurice was one of the founders of the Christian Socialist Movement in the mid nineteenth century, with a particular concern for providing education for working men, leading the foundation of the Working Men’s College in London in 1854.

He was a leading player in the intellectual life of his time, editing periodicals as well as holding chairs in both History and Literature and in Divinity at King’s London, though he lost these when his orthodoxy was challenged because of his broad-church opposition to traditional doctrines of hell. (Cambridge later gave him a Chair, and King’s later redeemed itself by creating one named after him.)

  1. Very good post: it’s just a shame to see modern socialism doing its best to chase the rich life of Judaeo-Christian faith traditions into the ground.
