Harriet Monsell of Clewer

I coudn’t resist giving you two pictures today. What a difference – but both depict Harriet Monsell (née O’Brien) born in 1811. She was an Irish girl, married a clergyman, was widowed, moved to Clewer near Windsor, and there under Tractarian influence became first Superior of the Community of St John the Baptist. The community grew rapidly and was focussed on social work with an international reach as well as running orphanages, schools, hospitals, and mission houses in parishes. Harriet died on Easter Day 1883.
