Nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy

As my Polish great-grandmother Annie Szamborski might have said, when someone tried to dump a problem on them inappropriately: “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” Essential ground-rule for clergy?

  1. I would have said that helping others with their monkeys was the raison d’etre of pastoral clergy. To paraphrase a great book, “The Earth is God’s circus, and all the monkeys within it.”

    • Of course that’s right. But there are times when we are pulled too far and take on too much, and need a nudge to remember that, as you say, God is the circusmaster not us.

  2. The “One Minute Monkey Management Guide” was a mainstay of our practice work ethic: everybody was encouraged to look after their own monkeys rather than pass them round the office!
