Cambridgeshire Ecumenical Council: Vellore Flooding Appeal

Recently we have been hearing and seeing a lot about the dreadful flooding in the north west of England. We may also have heard stories and seen images from South India where Chennai, India’s fourth largest city, has been suffering from severe flooding caused by the heaviest rainfall for more than a century – many people have died and many more been displaced from their homes. Chennai is only about 50 miles from Vellore, our ecumenical link diocese in the Church of South India and Vellore too has been very badly affected by this flooding.

images (2)Many of you will have met Alfred Arunkumar (Alfie), Principal of Kasam Agricultural Institute, while he was visiting Cambridgeshire in October, and Alfie has recently been in touch to tell us something about the effects of the floods. He says:

‘…district of Cuddalore and Vellore which is badly affected by torrential rains and as a result heavy floods which submerged almost 2/3 of the villages and farm lands in the district. We would like to help the affected communities and particularly farmers at this time distress and need but do not have the means to do it. If you think we could get involved in supporting them by providing hygiene kit, mat, rice(5kg) as immediate intervention to meet basic essentials i hope it will make a lot of difference in their lives. Once the fields are ready for cultivation which i think might take at least 2 or 3 weeks to become normal we could support small farmers with farm inputs like seeds, ploughing charges, remaking bunds of their fields…’.

Christmas is a time when every post brings yet more appeals for donations, and this is one more – but a little money goes a long way in India, and the small farmers in small villages in Vellore need all possible help to enable them to recover from the floods.

If you are able to help with a donation, however small, please send it to Revd Professor David Thompson, 7 Sherlock Road, Cambridge CB3 0HR (cheques should be payable to ‘Cambridgeshire Ecumenical Council Vellore Account’).

Thank you.
