St Michael and All Angels Bedford Park was the place to be yesterday as a full church gathered to give thanks for 40 years of priesthood for Bishop Graeme Knowles, celebrated with full Catholic Privileges and some fine canapes too. The sermon by Fr Graeme Rowlands was splendid too and I shall be stealing all the best bits. It’s been a privilege to know Graeme since our days together at Carlisle Cathedral – and especially to have his wisdom as my Hon Assistant (!) during my time in Eds and Ips.
Special prayers for St Michael’s on this their patronal festival. It’s obviously a very vibrant place as it combines old style thin lace surplices with family fun, and I see they are grafting now into a neighbouring church too. The church – and whole estate – are a party piece, an Arts and Crafts Garden Suburb, predating Welwyn & co, now swallowed up in Metroland, but happily well protected. All in all a lovely day out.
