Ely Cathedral Advent Pilgrimages

As part of the launch of the ‘Ely 2025’ strategy, Ely Cathedral is hosting four pilgrimage tour evenings, reserved solely for any associated with parish churches in the diocese. Each will last about 90 minutes and will involve moving to various points within the  building to reflect upon what it means to be ‘people fully alive’, visible and generous people of Christ.

Full information is below the fold. Please note places to attend must be reserved in advance and information on how to do that is also below.

From the earliest days of Christianity, monasteries and, later, cathedrals have opened their doors to pilgrims. Through the centuries, pilgrimages helped people to explore and deepen their faith.

Ely Cathedral therefore extends a warm invitation to the parishes of the Diocese of Ely to come on a pilgrimage in the autumn of 2015, to reflect on what it means to be “People fully alive”

All pilgrimages will start in the cathedral at 6.30 pm though a warm invitation is extended to attend Evensong (or Evening Prayer) at 5.30 pm first.

Each pilgrimage will be led by members of the Cathedral’s pilgrimage team.

Pilgrimages last about 90 minutes.

Pilgrimage tours move round the cathedral, making use of different spaces for prayer and reflection. Those who are disabled are welcome to bring a guide/helper with them and make use of their own wheelchair or mobility scooter inside the cathedral. Tours are not generally best suited to very young children and those under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

During Advent 2015, the following dates are available for parish pilgrimages. As far as is possible, space in the cathedral will be reserved solely for use by those on pilgrimage. Pilgrimages can be a useful opportunity to draw in those on the fringe of a church and are ideal for those exploring baptism and confirmation or deepening their own Christian understanding and discipleship.

Dates for People fully alive pilgrimages in Advent are as follows:

Tuesday, 1 December (with the option to stay on for candlelit Compline at 9.00 pm, sung by Ely Cathedral Compline Choir)

Monday, 7 December

Thursday, 10 December

Thursday, 17 December

Pilgrimage tours are offered free of charge but spaces on each tour are limited. To reserve places for your parish, please email Gillian Cook in the Cathedral Chapter Office g.cook@elycathedral.org no later than a week before the evening you wish to attend. Please give an email and phone contact and state how many places you wish to reserve. If any evening becomes over-subscribed you will be informed and details will be held on a waiting list.

We look forward to welcoming you to Ely Cathedral.
