Guided visit to Ethiopia – January 2016

A new guided tour of Ethiopia led by the Revd John Binns has been announced for January 2016.

Ethiopia has the only pre-colonial church of sub-Saharan Africa. It has followed a different route from other churches – a unique style of architecture with churches carved out of solid rock; keeping Judaic practices such as dietary rules, circumcision and a temple style of worship; strict fasting rules with 250 days a year set aside as fast days; an oral tradition of theological study considered to be the oldest educational syllabus ion the world still in use.

John Binns, Vicar of Great St Mary’s, has researched this surprising Christian tradition over many years and is leading a group to Ethiopia which will visit major Christian sites at Axum, Lalibela and Gondar – with an option to extend this to take in Muslim sites at Harar. In addition to the places, we will meet people – traditional theology teachers, development workers and others and will also celebrate the great festival of Timqat – Epiphany – with a local church community.

Dates are January 11-23 2016. For more details see the website www.windsandandstars.co.ukor contact John on jb344@cam.ac.uk
