Elix Church Maintenance   You may be aware of the Elix church maintenance scheme which came to an end last winter. Indeed your church may have been part of the scheme. We have been busy this year in preparing for the launch of Elix 2 and I’m pleased to say that we are now open for business.

Once again we are indebted to the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust for generously subsidising the cost of the work for the first 150 churches to sign up. The grant will represent 50% of the cost before VAT as listed churches can apply for a VAT “refund” through the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme – www.lpwscheme.org.uk

There are some changes to the earlier scheme – most notably the price. This has had to rise to £350 plus VAT but is fixed for the five years of the scheme. The cost of cherry-pickers or other specialist equipment is not included and will be subject to an additional charge. However, a grant will be available towards the cost for the first 150 to join. Elix churches will have to be also members of the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust. Finally, in order to make the system as smooth-running as possible and keep costs down to a minimum, we are asking you to pay by annual standing order. A simple form and all terms and conditions are included in the brochure.

If you would like to discuss Elix 2 with someone then please contact James Halsall or Charlotte Hodgson on 01473 298533 or email elix@cofesuffolk.org .  Don’t delay in applying to ensure you are within the first 150 and therefore receive the £150 annual grant. Please download the form and standing order from http://www.cofesuffolk.org/assets/downloads/yourchurch/DAC/Elix%202%20brochure.pdf
and send it to: Elix, St Nicholas Centre, 4 Cutler Street, Ipswich, IP1 1UQ.

Help at Harvest  We ask you to consider supporting Church Housing Trust this Harvest time. We work with vulnerable and at-risk people here in England to ensure that they do not end up back on the streets. Our funding goes to support more than 80 schemes that provide a roof over someone’s head as the weather becomes increasingly cold and damp. With our support those housing schemes also provide training, educational resources, options to detox from drugs or alcohol, life skills lessons, resettlement and finally, continued support for a new, independent life.

We are happy to supply newsletters, posters, Gift Aid envelopes, or speakers for your Harvest fundraising events.  We tackle the root causes of homelessness, in order to give people a second chance and stop the cycle of homelessness. Please consider donating today at www.churchhousingtrust.org.uk or by calling 020 7269 1630.

‘Prayer Vigil for Peace’ Saturday 1st November, at Felsham Church from 10am to 12 noon.  No one would argue that there are many problem areas in the world today, and it leaves us feeling unsure as to what we can do about it. Well, we can pray.  The Lavenham Deanery has arranged a morning called ‘Prayer Vigil for Peace’.  It won’t be two hours of sitting down trying to think what to pray – there will be a programme, with an introduction and an ending, and ideas for areas that need prayer most. There will be no pressure to pray aloud either.  We promise it will be warm!  Everyone of any faith or no faith at all is welcome to come.  For more details contact revsharon@btinternet.com.

Remembrance Sunday   St Peter’s Church, Holton contains Holton Airfield within its parish. During the second World War American fighters and bombers flew from here, and every year we remember the pilots who died, as well as those who died from the village. After our own Act of Remembrance at the war memorial in the churchyard and a service in church, we walk up to the airfield; and as we walk we read out loud the names of all the 300+ Americans from the airfield who died during the war. We end at about 12.45 with prayers and laying wreaths at the war memorials at the airfield. The Airfield Museum is open for refreshments and for people to look around.

This year there will be something different. In memory of those who died in the Great War, there will be a “poppy drop” of some 10,000 red poppies over the airfield while we are there, by courtesy of Maurice Hammond from the Hardwick Warbirds; he will probably use an Auster aircraft from the collection, being slower and quieter than the Mustang usually seen over the airfield on their special days.

Faith in the Fog – 25th November 2014 at 7.15 – Sudbury  Jeff Lucas and Searchlight Theatre Company are coming to St Peter’s Church, Market Hill, Sudbury for one evening on 25th November

Jeff has recently published a new book “Faith in the Fog” and this production will attempt to address some of the challenges of doing faith ‘in the fog’, tackling some serious issues like shame and depression, and yet doing so in an entertaining format which we hope all will enjoy. They will also be looking at some of the unhelpful myths that tend to creep into Christianity that actually make living the faith life harder. The evening that is planned will be rooted in biblical narrative, peppered with anecdote and humour, but all designed to encourage our audience to continue to faithfully follow Christ, even if they do so through difficult circumstances.   This is a unique opportunity to hear Jeff again in Sudbury.  Tickets, and further information, are available from: Peter Halden, 32 Canterbury Road, Sudbury, CO10 1LJ.

Price of the tickets is £12 (Concessions £8) – if you order tickets before 10th October they are priced at £10 (Concessions £8) – cheques should be made payable to “Churches Together in Sudbury & District” and a SAE should be included in your application for tickets.  https://vimeo.com/104755715 to see a short video click!
