Samuel and Henrietta Barnett

Today we remember Samuel Augustus Barnett (1844-1913), an East End priest, vicar of St Jude’s Whitechapel, who experimented with new ways of working such as evening schools and entertainments, and notably helping establish the first university settlement, Toynbee Hall in east London in 1884. Barnett became its first Warden. Henrietta his wife had been a co-worker with Octavia Hill and was known for her robust energy and assertive personality. Wow!
