Round the Bible in 40 Days: 40 days to go

Bible Challenge logo

Lent starts in 40 days time on March 9th. It’s time to start gearing up for what you’re going to do (and not do!).

I’m joining in the Christian Aid Count Your Blessings Twitter campaign so keep an eye open at #cyblessings.

My other big thing is that I have challenged myself to read Round the Bible in 40 Days – the whole book, start to finish. Forty friends from across our diocese have kindly agreed to provide an introduction each to one of the forty sections to get me going. Why not join in?

Click on the link to take you a special blog where you can read/download the reading plan, a starter guide to the Bible, and see the intros and comments day by day.

There is an RSS feed here which you can link to and get the day’s comment direct to your Reader or Inbox, and you’ll find links as well on my Facebook page and Twitter stream @bpdt. RTB has its own Facebook page and group as well, and if you can help set up any other networking links please do! My hope is that we may be able to build quite a community to share the adventure together.

A Surge of the Heart

Camera A Surge of the Heart for Women’s World Day of Prayer 2011 at St Andrew’s Church, Caxton.

A group of 16 women from across the parishes of the Papworth Team and Gamlingay & Hatley with Everton have met to discuss the issues that face women globally and locally, with a view to holding those issues in a space of prayer, contemplation and acceptance on March 4th between 12pm-6pm.

We are very keen to emphasise, hold and act upon the fact that the ethos for this act of worship is rooted in a desire for flourishing for humanity. We are not seeking to separate genders, but to look towards unity, whilst holding and acknowledging the situations that face women world-wide and recognising them on this particular day. With this in mind, the work of this project has been supported in prayer by many men and women across the parishes and more widely within the Diocese.

The act of worship will be a contemplative place of prayer that uses the arts to engage and we welcome contributions from local artists including Mick Abbott (Paradise and Other Places, Michaelhouse, Cambridge) and reflections from Angela Tilby and Vanessa Herrick amongst others. The idea is that people can drop in and stay for as long or little time as they wish and we are very hopeful that this will appeal to those for whom church doesn’t always feel accessible as well as those who are more rooted in a church environment. We are excited at the possibilities of using the arts in worship and hope you will support us as we address this in more rural parishes. We will provide a crèche area with art, books and activities for children so parents can engage with the various stations of worship in their own time.

The main image on the poster is called ‘Maria and Jesus’. Mick met them on the street in New York, he was struck by them and asked to photograph them. They really were called Maria & Jesus and he painted it as a second annunciation.

For more details, please see the poster by following this link.

The Moral Side of Murder

Justice (Michael Sandel)

Goodness me, a Harvard lecture presented straight on the Beeb. Excellent content as Professor Michael Sandel presents the first in a series of lectures from his Harvard undergraduate course in Political Philosophy. Watch (or download at BBC iPlayer).

But why does the Beeb have to credit the good Professor as the “key talent” when it gives the programme details of his Justice: A Citizen’s Guide to the 21st Century which also looks to be a very good offering?

  • The Frankenstein Fish May 29, 2012
Someone has pulled a fish from a river with the head of a Roach, the body of a Goldfish and the tail-fin of a Bream. This being the result of inter-breeding going on beneath the waves. No wonder perhaps, when one learns that this particular water flows through East Anglia. ‘If I can catch another like this I can name them, ‘Duelling Banjos’

A well-worn phrase in ‘Murder Mysery’ circles where posh talking geezers and ladies with long cigarette holders sit on sofas whilst a fat Belgian or English old lady explains at great length who has ‘killed’ the geezer who has spent the last two hours laying down on the stage with a dummy knife in his back. Obviously this phrase isn’t that well-known in Vati […]
