Well done Whaddon! I’m told the village name (south of Cambridge) means Wheat-hill. As someone from Cumbria I have to say I saw a lot of wheat but not much hill… But the warmth of the welcome more than made up for that, as we were treated to a scrumptious ploughman’s in church (no pews! look ![]()
what you can do with the space!), overlooked by some exceptional fifteenth century corbel gargoyles. The round the corner in a vintage 1935 London cab to the recreation ground to declare the fete open, and present Clare Byatt with a picture of the village as she leaves after serving as PCC Secretary for 23 years. And she only looks 21! What an innings!
I took the opportunity to use the church itself as an image of what it brings to its local community
- the tower, pointing upwards in hope in an uncertain world
- the nave, where we can gather together as community in love
- the sanctuary, where heaven and earth meet in our worship and the sacrament through faith, and everything is changed
Faith, hope and love: they’ll do for me.
